Slow for two reasons:

(1) Everything active outdoors happens under the sun! Slowsun is about slowing down the damaging effects of the sun!

(2) I love the 'Slow' philosophy (read Carl Honore's In Praise of Slow) and want to incorporate this philosophy into my life (business and personal)

  • Slow thinking is creative .. it is what we do when the pressure is off .. when we have time to let ideas simmer at their own pace .. yielding rich and subtle insights.

  • Slow down, Work smarter, Manage time, Play more.

  • The great benefit of slowing down is reclaiming the time and tranquility to make meaningful connections - with people, with culture, with work, with nature, with our own bodies and minds.

  • There is more to life than increasing its speed (Gandhi).

Pop Art Pic of MeI moved from Johannesburg to Cape Town in 2005. My mission was to work less and have more fun. A week after I arrived, I started rock climbing. At the end of my first summer, I decided to try kite-boarding (still trying!) to come to terms with the relentless south-easter. Soon sun, wind, water, sweat .. all started making their mark.

First came the paranoid visits to doctors and dermatologists to assure me that those strange brown and red moles, freckles, sun spots and marks popping up all over my body were 'OK'. Then came the uncomfortable mirror time .... This all became motivation to intensify the search for 'THE' ultimate sunscreen (and any other sun protection product to sustain my active outdoor lifestyle).

  • I want waterproof not water resistant!
  • I want 'apply today, re-apply tomorrow'! I don't want to ever have to worry about re-applying.
  • I want a natural look, not greasy, oily, fatty ... !
  • I don't want to worry about my skin breaking out after a couple of intense days in the sun!
  • I don't want any part of my body to burn .. again!
  • I want the effects of long term sun exposure to be taken care of.
It is not easy!!

My mother makes a fantastic body cream which we concocted a couple of days before Xmas. I asked Mom to add a sunscreen to the body cream. This resulted in an intense internet search for a great sunblock recipe. While looking for these recipes on the internet, I stumbled across fantastic waterproof sunscreen products ..... Mmmmmm ..... slowsun was conceived!
